The Senior Club sessions are held on a Monday night between 7.30pm and 9pm and are for anyone aged 14 or above. Seniors are taught a mix of 'dry side' first aid an resuscitation techniques and pool based rescue techniques. Most senior members start of by working towards the Survive & Save awards programme, and can also work towards other awards (age & courses dependant) including the National Pool Lifeguard and the National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches. Senior members are also heavily involved in competitions at local, regional and national levels and members are coached in the skills needed to compete at these levels. Prerequisites: None
Life Support is now the base pre-requisite for all senior lifesaving awards. In order to gain this award candidates must demonstrate effective CPR on a manikin, turn a live casualty, show action for vomiting and demonstrate the recovery position and also be able to treat bleeding, choking and shock. It is valid for a 24 months period and must be valid when taking any of the below awards.

Life Support 3 builds on the skills demonstrated during the Life Support Qualification. It is a much more involved qualification where candidates are expected to demonstrate an excellent level of competence while performing CPR on a adult, child and infant manikin, turn a live casualty, showing actions for vomiting, and the recovery position. Candidates also need to demonstrate an excellent knowledge of diagnosis and treatment of cardiac arrest, bleeding, choking, shock, hypothermia and drowning.

Established more than 100 years ago, the Bronze Medallion is still recognised as the flagship award for lifesaving. Many hundreds and thousands of adults and children have been awarded the Bronze Medallion. The award is designed to establish competent levels of knowledge combined with practical rescue skills in simulated open water emergencies. Training and formal assessment is undertaken in a swimming pool. Candidates undergo 20 hours of training prior to a formal assessment which will incorporate the following:
Life support techniques
Theory about water safety
Practical sessions covering land based and wading rescue
Test of strength and stamina - a timed swim in clothing of 100 metres including a 50 metre tow.
Rescue of struggling casualty
Submerged casualty resuscitation rescue
Simulated incident involving rescue of two casualties
The minimum age for candidates is 13 years (12 years if they have lifesaving 3 or Rookie 4). The Bronze Medallion is part of the GCSE PE swimming element and form part of the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme.
Prerequisites: Current Life Support, To hold or have held Bronze Medallion
The Award of Merit is open to those 14+ and follows on from the skills learnt in the Bronze Medallion award. Candidates are required to show more technical proficiency and swim further and faster. Many of the skills required are simply and extension of those required for the Bronze Medallion.
There are other lifesaving awards that can be taken including Bronze Cross, Silver Cross and Distinction. These awards encompass open water work and therefore are not normally completed within Warwick Lifesaving Club. For further information on these awards see the RLSS website.
The National Pool Lifeguard Qualification is accepted by all UK swimming pools and has widespread international recognition too. Warwick District Council Leisure Centres including Abbey Fields Swimming Pool in Kenilworth, Newbold Comyn Leisure centre in Leamington Spa and St Nicholas Park Leisure Centre in Warwick employ many of out candidates who have taken their qualification with us. Warwick Life Saving Club is a RLSS Approved Training Centre, however please note that this course only runs periodically and does not form part of the general senior training session. At present we have no course planned. Please contact us for more information.
This award teaches class management and practical lifesaving skills that may be needed by anyone teaching or coaching swimming or other programmed activities in a swimming pool. It is endorsed by the Amateur Swimming Association and The Institute of Swimming Teachers and Coaches. It is recognised in "Managing Health and Safety in Swimming Pools" as being appropriate for those supervising swimming pool programmed activities.
